As the world is moving towards better digitalization and inter-operability, healthcare services are also fast embracing the potential of the world wide web and e-commerce to expand the marketplace. In line with the growing industry, unscrupulous wellness product vendors are quick to exploit healthcare’s complex, fragmented, highly regulated; but insufficiently monitored online ecosystem for selfish financial gains.
Like any other prescription drugs, wellness products are too best sourced from professionals like doctors and pharmacists who can provide the right information on dosage and period of consumption. Consumers can opt for the generic version as a cheaper alternative and its authenticity can be verified through the hologram labeling and MAL number registered with the Health Ministry.
“Consumers are advised to purchase supplements from sellers with up-to-date local contact information and to also ensure that the business is registered with the Companies Commission of Malaysia,” said Yusop Zaini, Head of Department for Medical Assistant, I-Systems College Kuching, during an interview session held in the Kuching campus.
Commenting on the current consumer trend on purchasing wellness products online, Zaini urged the customers “to know more about the product, by looking at reviews made by other consumers. They can then make a more informed choice about the product and also the platform where it is showcased”.
On their part, consumers and online shoppers can play a bigger role in protecting themselves against dubious dealers on the Internet by submitting complaints on suspicious health products and registered drugs being sold online.
“We always teach our Medical Assistant students to be aware of the current trends in healthcare as they will come across such cases when they enter the workforce”
While the government is doing their jobs on the health policies, the community should also be involved in any other way possible. And, this also includes the future medical practitioner.
”We took it as our calling to prepare the future medical practitioner so that they are ready to face the challenges in the workplace. We have been doing so for the past 10 years and for many years to come” he added.
